Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese chefs make Huong's a West End Icon
Caption: The three amigos: An Van Vo, Somsuk and Patchala
Huong’s in Vulture St has been a mecca for lovers of Vietnamese and Chinese cuisine for decades. When Pranee Morgan took over the restaurant a few years ago, however, she was determined to maintain its excellent reputation while also adding to its cachet by introducing top quality Thai cuisine to the menu.
Pranee returned to Thailand and went hunting for a Master Thai Chef in Bangkok, and found Somsuk running the kitchen at one of the city’s leading hotels, where he specialised in Thai and Chinese cuisine.
Somsuk was more than attracted to the idea of working in Brisbane, and was easily persuaded to up stakes and make the move to sunny Brisbane.
On arrival, he found himself working in the kitchen alongside An Van Vo, who has been Huong’s Vietnamese Chef for over 20 years, and Patchala (Pranee’s sister, and an excellent Thai Chef in her own right.)
According to Pranee, having three chefs in the kitchen preparing three different cuisines may seem extravagant, but it has certainly paid off for her customers.
“All three cuisines are equally popular,” she says. “Often we’ll serve three different styles of food to the same table, and occasionally to the same person.”
Where customers enjoy a do-it-yourself banquet – ordering a variety of dishes for the table and sampling portions of each – they can be assured a multi-cultural feast, prepared to the highest standards, according to Pranee.
If you haven’t paid a visit to Huong’s for a while, maybe it’s time to re-discover a true West End icon.
