Phil Vanderzeil and his team of practitioners - Nicky McDonald, Corinne Young, Miranda Bodman, Shelly Olin and Caroline Francis  - are celebrating 26 years of clinical practice in the local community.

Phil Vanderzeil, the clinical director and owner of Acupuncture & Natural Therapy Centre, said “It has been a tremendous journey since we first  set up practice in West End in 1983. Complementary medicine like Acupuncture, Herbalism and Massage were very much unknown then but like any quality product that had stood the test of time, it was obvious that these systems of health care were going to emerge, playing a vital part in community health”.

“We started in Browning St, moved to the centre of Boundary Street for 10 years and have been in Thomas St for the past 16 years.”

Phil went on to say that West End was and will always be a great suburb, a wonderful place that is highly tolerant of cultural, ethnic and social idiosyncrasies with a wonderful mixture of local businesses. “Most people who run businesses here know each other well”.

The clinic is now open Monday to Saturday and treats a variety of common ailments. “This is a family practice,” Phil said. “ Migraine, Infertility, Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Neck and Back problems, IVF, Arthritis, Induction of pregnancy and Morning sickness are just a few conditions we deal with through a busy week”.

Effective healthcare in its purest form requires the practitioner to develop not only a clear understanding of the causative factors and the diagnosis of an illness, but also an understanding of the multitude of medical and human variations.  Treatment is as far as possible person-specific.

Quality individualised healthcare also requires the practitioner to identify and emphasize prevention as well as treatment, identifying and treating the cause of the disease rather than suppressing the symptoms, treating the whole body rather than the ailing part and understanding the interaction between the body, emotion and spirit.  The famous Chinese sage Lou-tze was once known to have suggested that’’ the key to long life, is to restore balance and harmony in the functioning systems of the individual”

Phil Vanderzeil, who recently completed a Masters In Acupuncture at the University of Western Sydney and who is a past President of the Australian Acupuncture & Chinese Medicine Association, suggests that high quality research is now rapidly emerging in mainstream journals on the success of Acupuncture in the treatment of a broad cross section of illnesses, “”his is a low energy, low carbon and low side effects medical treatment”.
