New life for laneways

Council announces plan to revitalise Brisbane's laneways and hidden spaces
Brisbane’s hidden and under-utilised CBD spaces are set to come alive with colour and activity, as the Brisbane City Council Vibrant Laneways project gets underway.

Larger than life Arnaldo Pomodoro sculptures, a bustling lane with cafes and specialist retailers, and a CBD-first water harvesting feature are a few of the things in store.

BCC's Amanda Cooper said activity had begun beneath Turbot Street overpass and at the foot of Jacob’s Ladder between Wickham and Ann Streets.

“Revitalising these small spaces is part of the City Centre Master Plan to create a bustling, cosmopolitan city,” she said.

“It’s an exciting time for the CBD. These projects will transform the city’s laneways and small spaces into vibrant, safe spaces with artwork and people.

“We’re creating boutique meeting places, better connections between buildings, and places to relax and experience the texture and pace of Brisbane life.”

Cr Cooper said behind each project, there were economic benefits for CBD owners and traders, as well as amenity and recreational benefits for residents and visitors.

As part of the Turbot Street underpass project, Roma Street will get a paving upgrade, visually attractive artwork, native vegetation and new seating as well as a dramatic state-of-the-art stormwater harvesting feature.

“Now the space is a concrete-filled section underneath the Turbot Street off-ramp but in several months, it will boast a first in water sensitive design for the CBD,” she said.

Jacob’s Ladder will be transformed into a visually stunning landmark, with the famous Arnaldo Pomodoro Forme Del Mitro statues attracting art-lovers from across the city.

Consultation starts at the end of the month for Burnett Lane, which could breathe new life into the street by transforming it into a bustling haven of cafes and eclectic outlets.

Last year’s successful pilot Inhabit involving the installation of colourful, unusual artwork around Brisbane’s CBD will be continued.

Inhabit’s Market Street organic farmers market with live Jazz will see a reincarnation with the new Reddacliff Place Jan Powers Market kicking off on March 4.

“I look forward to seeing how these enhancement projects combine to improve the functioning of the city and support an arts and events program that boosts city life.”
