Body art revisited

Eumundi Heritage Centre hosts "Reflections on the Australian Body Art Carnivale"
A new exhibition at Discover Eumundi Heritage and Visitor Centre highlights the colour and creativity that is the Australian Body Art Carnivale, an event held in Eumundi each September.

Manager of Discover Eumundi Wendy Birrell says the exhibition features a selection of photographs and items from the 2008 Carnivale.

“The images of body art truly capture the spirit of the weekend and highlight the masterpieces that emerged as part of the Carnivale,” she says.

“And aside from the impressive photographs on display, there are also examples of body paints and tools, along with some incredible wearable art garments’.

Wendy says the wearable art was an exciting element introduced to the Australian Body Art Carnivale this year.

“All garments entered as part of the wearable art competition and parades were created from reused or secondhand materials – items that had had a life before,” says Wendy.

“The exhibition include a piece by Kait Manchip which features milk bottle tops, jar lids and takeway container lids, each handpainted with images borrowed from Aboriginal Art, and all knotted together to create a kind of chainmail. It is a tribute to the Australian Prime Minister for finally saying ‘Sorry’ to the traditional owners of this country,” Wendy explains.

Wendy also highlights a stand-out garment by designer Maggie Wretham titled ‘Junk Mail Kimono’.

“Inspired by the age old art of Japanese paper folding, the kimono was lovingly and patiently hand-rolled using junk mail, discarded cardboard, along with some worn business ties.”

The Australian Body Art Carnivale exhibition opens Thursday 4 December at 4.30pm, and will be in the old police cells exhibition space at Discover Eumundi. The exhibition continues until March 2009.

This opening of the exhibition (on 4 December) coincides with Eumundi’s first Twilight Market for this summer.
