Elements Third Age Living @ Springwood launched a 117 home retirement hamlet on Sunday 23 November with a gifting ceremony, whereby 28 acres of Eucalypt forest was donated to Queensland Parks and Wildlife (QPW).

This bushland adjoins the Daisy Hill State Forest and is located in the Koala Coast nature corridor, a stretch of land spanning 375sq kilometres, and is home to an estimated 5,000 koalas.

Accepting this large portion of privately owned land was Barbara Stone MP, State Member for Springwood. Mr Terry Wall, Director General of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also attended accompanied by QPW Park Rangers who brought along a koala as a symbol of appreciation.

The local residents were further entertained by the John Paul College Silver Strings Orchestra. Head of the University of Queensland Koala Study Program, Dr Frank Carrick, was also present and commented on the importance of continued habitat conservation for these threatened mammals. “Loss of habitat due to widespread urbanisation is the biggest threat to the species, so I am very pleased to see that landowners like Ms Chiou See Anderson appreciate the importance of such nature refuge and is willing to work hard to find a solution to ensure that development and conservation do complement each other”, Dr Carrick said.

Chiou See Anderson of Elements Third Age Living @ Springwood, said she sees this situation as a win for all concerned. “Residents of the Elements retirement community will appreciate first hand the beauty and tranquillity of living amidst these beautiful eucalypts, safe in the knowledge that this land cannot be encroached upon by any development. With walking and cycling paths available in the adjoining Daisy Hill State Forest, our residents and their families can fully ppreciate the abundant flora and fauna”, Ms Anderson said.
