Recognition for our Fiona

West End's Fiona Staeger wins Queensland Writers Centre 2009 Johnno Award
The winner of the Queensland Writers Centre (QWC) 2009 Johnno Award is Fiona Stager, co-owner of Avid Reader Bookshop and President of the Australian Booksellers Association.

Fiona has been recognised for her vision and effectiveness in creating a presence and dignity for Queensland writers.

For over 11 years Avid Reader has been a bookstore with a difference: a community hub of literature, expression and ideas. “I wanted to create a bookshop that fosters discussion and debate,” said Fiona. “To provide a place where you can wear your political heart on your sleeve and support initiatives you want to support.”

Established in 2001, the Johnno Award is presented to an individual or group in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Queensland writers and writing. Drawing its name from the eponymous David Malouf novel, the Johnno Award recognises significant work within Queensland that largely goes unrecognised by the public and industry.

“Fiona actively contributes to a contemporary version of salon culture in Queensland - where a supportive community of ideas and information are exchanged through the diverse range of titles, events, launches and bookclubs associated with her business,” said QWC Chief Executive Officer Kate Eltham.

Of her contribution to writing culture in Queensland, Fiona said it’s not confined to geography. “It’s not Queensland writing so much as great writing,” she said. “You can write a book set in Brisbane that will have a wider audience.”

Previous winners of the award include Nick Earls, papertiger media, JUTE Theatre Ensemble, Ross Clark, Liz Huf, Sue Abbey and Jeanie Adams.

Queensland Writers Centre is the premier writing organisation for Queensland writers. With a membership of over 2,300, QWC is the leading provider of information, services and support for writers and writing throughout regional and metropolitan Queensland.
