Florentine success for Janine


Local artist Janine Whitling wins Lorenzo il Magnifico award at the Florence Biennale Arts Festival

 

Janine Whitling recently completed a Masters in Contemporary Art from the University of Tasmania in 2009, and has kick-started her arts career by being selected as a finalist in the 59th Blake Prize of 2010. Her work ‘God in All Worlds' an installation of hanging scrolls, was selected to tour Australia for the following year with the Touring Blake Prize.

In December 2011 Janine moved to Brisbane from Mackay and now loves her new environment which nurtures her artistic pursuits. It was at this time that the International Florence Biennale selected her as an entrant to the 2011 exhibition.Janine traveled to Florence Italy with the assistance of a Queensland Artstart Grant  in December to be a part of the 8th edition of the Florence Biennale hosted at the Fortezza de Basso (http://www.florencebiennale.org/en/ebiennale11.php ).

The Biennale honoured the master José Luis Cuevas and designer Agatha Ruiz de la Prada with lifetime achievement awards, and showcased more than 500 artists from all over the world in categories of painting, installations, sculpture, digital media, photography and mixed medium.

The exhibition was inaugurated on the 3rd December and continued until the 10th December when the international jury (http://www.florencebiennale.org/en/egiuria11.php ) announced the winners of each category. Janine Whitling from Australia won a "Lorenzo il Magnifico" fourth place medal award for her hanging installation "Metamorphosis".

After returning to Australia Janine is keen to find gallery representation locally and get more involved in the art scene in Queensland.
