Twelve Restaurant and Cellar is The Melbourne Hotel’s newest dining experience, and a visit quickly confirms why the venue has everyone talking. The restaurant takes the fine dining experience to a new level for West End serving up first-class food, an extensive wine selection and service second to none.

Set upstairs above the hotel’s bustling bar the restaurant is removed, quiet and beautifully formally for lunch. Tables are set with white clothes and a unique angular table setting to catch your eye. Delicious breads are served promptly and the attentive waiters make sure your glass is never below half full.

The menu bucks the recent trends of many other modern restaurants, avoiding the shock value of unusual and out there flavour combinations to offer a wide selection of highly edible classical meals, with strong international influences.

I’m told the favourites so far are the Junee Lamb Cutlets wrapped in Prosciutto and served on a trio of handmade gnocchi and the Seared Kakadu Buffalo with tossed Congo Potatoes, Damper and Bush Greens.

Overall the menu will certainly impress with a variety of dishes to suit any taste, and make you wish you could try them all – and with the menu changing seasonally I look forward to seeing what the restaurant will come up with next.

After ordering, we are visited by the restaurant’s in house sommelier to make suggestions on wine to accompany our meals. In addition to its food, the restaurant also prides itself on its wine offerings with an impressive library (complete with ladder and lights) to showcase its selection. The collection includes some of the finest Australian and imported wines and boasts every vintage of Penfold’s Grange since 1961. There is also a degustation menu available on request.

Dishes on the desert menu are created at your table with traditional flambé techniques and come with homemade gelato or ice cream.
